Very little in terms of facilities. The hospital is an utterly depressing dump that is falling apart. The older part of the hospital with A&E is so bad you truly can't believe you're in an NHS hospital in the modern age. The staff accommodation is on par with a Siberian prison. Update: There has been a big investment recently with new ward block...More
Reasonable amount of parking. Can be congested at peak times. Some parking areas are free. If you arrive on Tuesday any time after half 8, good luck.
Most of the notes are still paper, ICU is digital, radiology requests and reports are all digital.
It theoretically exists. Bus to Belfast right outside the hospital. Taxi's are incredibly cheap.
Canteen food has improved, theres now salad options, hot veggie options etc. Haven't seen vegan, don't know about gluten free.
Derry is a small but very friendly city. There are countless brilliant restaurants that are all very reasonably priced (meal for two for £30 no problem). Theres lots to do if you look for it. Its right beside the north coast and also Donegal so lots of ways to spend the weekend.
24 hour shifts. The introduction of VFC happened half way through my placement, that cut the bleeps by a good 70%. Some consultants are brilliant, some have a completely shocking attitude and belong in the 50's. Plenty of operating to be doing, good for log book. Clinic is well run, smooth. Support depends on the reg you're on with (these rotate ...More
Here for F2 a while back. The substantive consultants were great, really tried to make sure you got your numbers and got something out of the placement. I was preparing to apply for core training at the time so they were very helpful with letting me do teaching ,audits, QIP's etc. If you put effort in they put effort in. The locum consultants were ...More
Really friendly approachable consultants. Face to face interaction between referrers and radiology is very much encouraged which builds up relationships between departments and makes the whole interaction much friendlier. Consultants are always available for help, in or out of hours. Some are better than others but I don't know an area of life wher ...More
Busy on call but ward days are normally manageable. Most consultants very supportive. Hospital is big enough to have most services, but small enough to get to know most staff. Food is terrible in the canteen. There is a doctors mess which helps.
Absolute **** hole of a place. Worst hospital I've ever had the misfortune to set foot in. A terrible, terrible place with a horrifically toxic culture. As an outsider I was shocked at how different this part of the country was from the rest of NI. Such a dour, miserable collection of locals with a gloominess which seeps into every part of the ho ...More
