Review
College tutors/obstetric consultants are great and go over and above for trainees. That aside there is a definite culture of systemic bullying - it’s evident mostly in theatres, and a horrible attitude of “well that’s not how we used to do it” “that’s just the way it is”. A real effort from junior new consultants to establish change is almost impossible against the senior consultant body. I really thought I loved this job - it was only till I worked elsewhere that I realised the true meaning of Stockholm syndrome and that finding your junior/fellow colleagues crying in the changing rooms wasn’t normal. Find the good consultants and don’t take things personally.

After several of the consultants at my trust read a review on here and asked "IS IT REALLY THAT BAD?!", I felt I had to comment on my time at GRI. I worked there as core trainee with a 6 month stint at a DGH outside Glasgow. Granted the parking isn't amazing but you should try parking at some of the hospitals down south. At least at GRI you could buy these multi-entry tickets which saved you money. Also on nightshift you only had to pay for an hours parking as the charges don't kick in until 8am. As for the Duty2 shifts, the ST6/7s I was on with seemed to like them as they get their oncall out the way rather than doing a run of nightshifts. I always seemed to be on with the same trainee which was good and they said its much easier coming off a bad duty 2 than a run of nights where your sleep pattern is all to pot. The induction was a bit old school with a walk around the hospital buy I'd prefer that to "here's a page, good luck mate." The rota was fair in that I got all the AL/SL I wanted but at times when others were off eg summer, you tended to do more backfill. The consultants were all pretty nice from memory although the ICU guys were uber keen. This was good in the sense they would always come in to support you overnight but I could do without the 8am teaching session during handover after a busy shift. I'm sure the intention was good and I retained some of it. Ok there is no Cordon Bleu cantene on site but the tea room served rolls and I mostly brought my own food. There are also loads of places nearby which was great for oncalls when the nurses would order enough to feed the five thousand! The place is full of history and tradition with old pics displayed everywhere and I got the sense the consultants were proud they worked there and were keen to continue it. I have fond memories and wanted to feed that back in the face of what I felt was very harsh criticism from another reviewer who was probably just disgruntled at the end of a bad nightshift!

Marmite? That’s not marmite, marmite is a normal thing, intensely liked / disliked by people, as per their taste. That was systematic bullying and undermining that was normalised so much that even consultants that had been there a few years were still treated like registrars by some people, it was that obvious. It was careless, it was inconsiderate, unkind. Obviously there were /are plenty good people at GRI, that is of course the norm, but the sad thing was how everyone knew who the rotten apple/s were, but just accepted them as “normal”, all just to accumulate some career currency. They almost forgot how to be kind, how to care, they almost forgot that we are human too. That said, change of guard is imminent, there is tons of training available, and if you can focus, put your head down, enjoy the good bits, you’ll still come out with good skills & even some great friends. Best of luck to everyone. I won’t be choosing to work there as a consultant though.

I would largely like to echo what the other reviews have already touched on and give my own two cents. The vast majority of the consultants at GRI are fantastic - easy to get on with, approachable and enthusiastic to teach. In particular the obstetric department are fantastic and despite recent rota challenges, I really enjoyed working in PRM and would happily return. College tutors also clearly put in a lot of time and effort and this is much appreciated. From a patient safety perspective I cannot comprehend how the 24 hour duty 2 shift exists. Clearly it is designed to keep the old guard in bed overnight. Completely agree about ITU handovers, but suspect this has improved over the years. Varies depending on personnel, but after a busy nightshift the last thing we need is to be grilled on the minutiae of each patient's admission and to recite blood results that have only become available 2 minutes before handover. Otherwise a great unit to work in, excellent learning opportunities and broadly well supported in and out of hours. I appreciate the royal was built over 200 years ago but it could really do with some better staff facilities. Above all the food on offer is really quite abysmal. The canteen food is of very low quality and this is especially true of the 'healthy' options. Pre-pandemic the parking situation was disgraceful, charging upwards of £3/ hour for staff or visitors to a hospital is shocking. Really hope the car park continues to be free of charge. Hoping for some changes at GRI in the coming years, overall I think the positives outweigh the negatives - but only just.

I can't begin to describe how much I hate this place. You know all the recent work they've done on fatigue and trainee wellbeing- where they talk about how you can’t perform without the basics... food, getting leave, car parking, respect, decent rota published in good time. GRI fails on all accounts and doesn't care. Why anyone would want to work here I have no idea. I'll start with the most basic thing a hospital should provide for it's employees. The facilities are piss poor, particularly out of hours. If you want a coffee or food on nightshift, you're out of luck unless the midwives have had a tea on for someone. Even during the day the options are either some pre-packaged junk from WHSmith or rushing down to Mabels cafe in the hopes they'll have a roll left. Trainees don't have anywhere to put their stuff (if you aren't one of the lucky ones and are honoured with a locker thanks to some lucky bastard escaping the awful place). You'll also be charged something ludicrous like £24/day for the privilege of parking in the only car park. Street parking nearby is for a maximum of 3hrs and expensive anyway. Either that or you can take your life in your hands and park in Dennistoun- understanding that your car might not be there when you get back. Then - the rota (particularly the maternity rota which is just eternal nights). Written by someone who either just despises trainees, or is experimenting on how far they can abuse someone before they have a mental breakdown. That's if you can even work out where you're supposed to be from the 5 conflicting rota emails you've received from various secretaries over the course of the week. They also have a form of torture on the general rota called a "Duty 2" shift for senior trainees. A 24hr on call where they offer you the amazing training opportunity of learning how to do a busy 12hr CEPOD shift with an empty stomach and full bladder followed by 12hrs "at home" (/of waiting to be dragged back into the hospital at your physiological worst to either anaesthetise someone at death's door or do a tour of Glasgow with them in the back of an ambulance). How they've not gotten rid of such an archaic unsafe shift is beyond me. Well it would be if I hadn't experienced first hand how trainees are treated here. Then you've got the trainee reps, who are sadly either highly ineffectual, or people who seem to think that they are on the ladder to the most illustrious career in anaesthesia in Glasgow, and are therefore quite happy to sacrifice their fellow trainees to ensure they get a consultant job at GRI. Oh, and if you'd like study leave you'll have to offer to either work your wedding or miss the birth of your first child. Overall - at GRI you have to give up expecting to be treated like a human, and accept your new miserable existence as a space on a rota. "It's just the way it is." Good luck.
