Clinical staff were superficially nice, but didn't care about training, and were interested in running service only. No genuine feedback given despite asking. Rota is busy but not unreasonable. However rota coordinators are terrible, unreasonable and uncaring and despite numerous attempts by juniors, no one has been able to address it and senior consultant are either powerless to change things or do not care. Work space is cramped and limited ability to work efficiently.

Terrible rota for SHOs, nights every two weeks. Junior doctor administrators are awful, reject annual leave all the time, petty and some of the rudest people I’ve ever met. Nurses on the acute wards don’t do bloods or cannulas and even ward sisters state they’re not trained in male catheters. Very much service provision. The consultants are fairly decent, but unless you actively seek it out nobody is really interested in your learning.

This is an amazing placement for a core surgical trainee. The rota is 08:00-17:00 NWD and on-call and night shifts are 20:30-09:00. There are no long days, or weekend day oncalls. When not oncall you are free to do as you chose (theatre, clinic, research, audit, revision) as long as you are available if there is need for emergency ward cover. All of the SpRs are supporting and great at teaching, consultants are approachable. The JDA (rota/admin) team make everything work, they are supportive and will actively help you with getting time off for courses, guiding you through expenses claims etc.

Very large ED with 36 majors and 8-9 resus beds. Increased to 44 majors beds in the winter covid pandemic. This can be rather anonymous at times, as there's so many doctors and nurses it's rare to work with the same person more than a handful of times. Well supported, juniors are expected to discuss all patients. Seniors don't pressure junior staff to see more patients even when the wait is long. Departmental teaching is nearly non existent. Granted I worked here during the 2nd wave of covid. Admin team is great and give rota with plenty of time to spare, and including allocated SPA and teaching time. Makes reasonable allowances for leave. Very approachable.

As a first job, whilst generally fairly supported, was quite hard dealing with getting used to working as well as the emotional side of things. No nights as an F1 but fairly tiring rota. Lovely team on the wards.

Lovely, friendly team, great opportunities if keen on surgery and paediatrics. Otherwise, most days very well staffed so plenty of time for revision/projects

One of the best A&Es to work in. The support is second to none. You will never feel that you are expected to work above your paygrade. Constant senior support with great staffing levels. The rota co-ordinators are a god send and really are flexible with leaves. Only con - locum pay is bad would advise going to a DGH to locum.

Good SHO/CT job. Well supported. Not the best for FY1 as they get left to deal with ward work and generally have to stay late. Supportive and friendly seniors

Rota gaps, poor rota planning and short staffing are the main themes of medicine at the royal infirmary. When it is raised with senior management we are often told that we are lucky with what we have. Trainees are treated like a number with the limited training opportunities we have cancelled last minute due to the aforementioned 3 themes. There are some fantastic consultants, nurses and other healthcare professionals but unfortunately it is not enough to change the trainee experience overall. JDAs (rota coordinators) are inflexible with leave requests, even if requested much ahead of time. Parking is a nightmare and we pay a lot for the experience.
