I personally loved the mess. Massage chairs, TV, computers, snacks and hot drinks.
COVID brought around free parking for all staff, which is yet to be re-instated (as the case when this was posted Feb 2022!) New carparks were opened in the 2020-21 training year, resulting in four main carparks available for staff parking - generally no issues finding a space if you arrive by 8:30/45am (most specialities will start their normal da...More
Multiple different electronic systems used for observations, handovers (for some specialties), prescribing (with some drugs such as fluids/infusions, insulin and warfarin on paper charts), clinic letters/outpatient documentation, clinic/theatre 'appointments. There's a current push towards an integrated system, although unlikely to happen any time ...More
There’s a busstop right in front of the hospital for traffic in either direction, with several buses plying through. The main bus is number 31, which connects Luton and Dunstable, and comes around thrice an hour on weekdays. Later at night, and on weekends, public transport can be poorer.
The canteen is below average. Food is generally unhealthy and pricey.
Junior doctors are distributed in most directions around Luton - a large proportion commute from North/West London, with many living in Hemel Hempstead, St. Albans, Leighton Buzzard, Hitchin, and a handful living in Luton and Dunstable areas. Most juniors doctors commute by driving, with some taking the train to Leagrave station and a 15-20 minute ...More
Great consultants, lovely nurses, fun colleagues turning into good friends even after I left. Food may be pricey but still isn't so bad. vegetarian options, fish and chips, some nice cafes nearby if you like. A&E a bit of a maze and gets crazy but still quite enjoyable. Good locum opportunities. Electronic systems in place like nervecentre, ICE ...More
If you are a vulnerable trainee and different skin colour than being “white”, then this place is not meant for you. GP trainer’s (TPD 's and their white bosse's ) , love to exploit vulnerable IMG trainees, because they want to show each other their greatness of so called “support provided”, They act of showing off “support” factual they would blam ...More
The department is kept alive by the nature of being the only bariatric centre in the region. The hospital is pathetic, leadership self serving, politics aplenty, trainees shafted. Stay away unless you really want to do bariatrics.
The stroke ward is extremely well run and was a pleasure to work on. It normally has two to three registrars daily, one holds the stroke bleep so is on and off the ward through the day, the remaining registrar(s) are always present. In general staffing levels are quite good. Consultant ward round happened twice a week, the remaining days the consul ...More
I did general surgery here as an FY1. Regardless of which surgical speciality you are listed as on paper (UGI/Breast (they're the same thing, breast is basically UGI), colorectal, urology), you will do some shifts on the other surgical specialities over the course of your rotation. Most working days were 8-5, and I always left on time (although it ...More
