Well provisioned and active mess.
Very limited, have to turn up before 7:30 to get a space. Park and ride available but closes before end of long day. Permit passes now changing, will be introducing £50 per year permit and need to fulfil certain criteria e.g. over 1.5 miles away from site, needing to come in OOH often etc.
Trusts own EPR for lists, clinical noting and referrals - can be temperamental. Usual JAC/ICE/PACS like most other places. Access to GP notes via CHIE is useful.
Train station 5 min cycle (down a hill), 25 min walk Park & ride available
Decent food but only available in normal working hours. Vending machines often not working at night.
Winchester is pretty, good amount of places to eat given size, but really expensive houses & accommodation. Quick trains to London, not too far from South downs & south coast.
Challenging job but fun! You do 2 months in Basingstoke for trauma exposure then 2 months in Winchester. Basingstoke job is very busy and you are often managing the wards alone or with another F1. Consultant of the week and registrars always super keen to answer queries although you have to often hunt them down! Some will give you their numbers a ...More
Absolutely incredible placement, super friendly seniors makes it feel like a tight knit group. Some of the best nurses you'll come across - super keen to help you out and will bail you out of trouble loads of times! Such a quality rotation, covering a wide breadth of medicine! You'll see pretty much everything! Also a great place to learn procedure ...More
Very well supported on most days. Good reg and SHO cover on most days, unless registrars are in clinic or scoping, in which case it gets a bit tougher but consultants around all day for advice. Good opportunity to get hands on e.g. ascitic taps and drains to observe or be guided through. Nursing and other HCP very good. Thoroughly enjoyed my time o ...More
Lovely small-ish place to work with a great community feel. Intuitive electronic systems. Excellent doctors mess (although there was talk about knocking it down and building a new one around the time I was finishing). Winchester itself is an ideal place to live, quiet and leafy, with great shops and restaurants and everything in walking distance. B ...More
Small hospital, only 2-3 novices rotating in each August/Feb intake. Get to know consultants (both Anaesthetic and surgical) really quickly which is nice as they'll let you get on with your own thing There's a novice teaching programme (>1/wk) that's really in depth There is only a cepod list in the afternoon which is a bit odd The size of the hosp ...More
