Pros
- Only senior registrars rotate here so good teachers in theatre and on calls
- Friendly consultants
- F1s cover the ward, SHOs only have to cover the elective ward at Chorley (not too strenuous, most of the job is managing the very needy nurses) or assist with orthogeriatrics (usually released for the afternoon to go to theatre etc)
- MTC experience. Ortho only takes ortho cases, no nec fasc
- Largely proactive ED, one of the best in the region
- Can easily get theatre numbers for CSTs
- Hospital staff are very friendly, ask nurses to take bloods etc it will get done without any resistance
- Not usually overloaded with referrals
Cons
- Rota is a bit bareboned (1 in 7) which is intense for an MTC
- Consequence of above means theatre exposure can be limited, especially for the F2s as CSTs/JCFs are prioritised. Not many SHOs can take leave on a given day
- Poor quality of referrals from urgent care
- Scheduled activity can change even the night before with no notification (eg theatre day changes to
- No F1 cover on ward at night but there is sporadic assistance from hospital at night team
Overall it's a good job for learning and experience but it's quite tiring with the intensity of the rota
