Brendo surgery - day job very quiet. On calls in general surgery - understaffed. Very busy at first. Nurses could be very unhelpful at times. However, surgical reg always on site - some rude, some nice. ITU reg always on site. Service provision. No surgery. FY teaching awful Department teaching rare Training for surgery limited

Cardiology at the RVI is linked to the Acute Internal Medicine placement where each FY doctor covers a medicine ward for 8 weeks and the Assessment Suite (AMU) for 8 weeks. The other options available to FY doctors are the respiratory, gastro, COTE or mixed medical ward (endocrine/tox). The consultants are on for a week at a time and a consultant led ward round only happens for half the ward each day, so the foundation doctor is expected to perform daily reviews. A mixed bag, some with extremely slow ward rounds (can finish after 3pm if a certain consultant is on). The registrars may or may not be on each day so if you are wanting support, the CT doctor is your point of call. The situation isn't terrible but its not great either. The nursing staff were very pushy about discharge letters, particularly having a whole board of names that they keep pointing at multiple times a day. They don't seem to understand that patient reviews come first. The ward clerk I worked with had a very special way to annoy junior docs by hiding all specimen bags because apparently other wards liked to steal them??? Made daily bloods such a chore having to ask her for each single one. I don't have fond memories of my time there but that's mostly down to the non-medical staff that I've had to work with.

The Assessment Suite at RVI is well supported with plenty of more senior doctors (CTs/SpRs) to reach out to for help when needed. Nursing staff are brilliant as well, work well together with the medics to get patients seen quickly. Excellent night cover as you are not expected to cover BoH wards. Good place to get a flavour of a wide range of medical conditions. After the morning post-take ward round there is no other fixed time for a ward round, so you just need to find the consultants and get them to see your patient whenever you are done. The consultants are great and normally happy to offer feedback on any patient that you've clerked. Formal teaching is limited to 15 minutes per day so not the best.

Really big team of consultants and juniors in major trauma centre. Everyone keen to help you get involved. Work was interesting and varied with support always available in adult ED. Opportunities to be involved in trauma calls and more responsibility given as months went on. However, GP trainees also covered paeds ED with little training and overnight often minimal support. Although most children were well it felt stressful and there was a lot of uncertainty, I also felt bad asking for help at times as you had to call someone over from adults. Although everyone was always supportive I did feel stressed during this placement as there was strong drive not to breach and I therefore always felt I should be faster (although this was never said to me). I also really struggled with feeling a bit isolated due to constantly shifting rotas and the associated difficulty getting to know anyone even after 6 months. (I personally prefer knowing a few people well to lots of people a little). I was burnt out after this job but constant shifts don't suit me as an individual.

Overall the RVI in general seems to be very understaffed compared with other local trusts such as Sunderland and Northumbria. On the orthopaedic rotation there are only 4-5 juniors and you all carry dect phones. In hours minimum staffing is 2 and one person will typically cover 45 trauma patients and another will cover between 10-20 spines patients plus 5 Paeds ortho patients. Ultimately you are technically on call all the time to the ward and it is extremely busy with no departmental teaching. There are also no F2’s on the ward and is notorious for being the most difficult F1 job in the hospital. Seniors are great and love to get you involved in theatre but ultimately there is not time at all to go and you never stop, often finishing late. It seems like the rotation may be improving for the better.

2months on Medicine Wards Variable depending on ward some evening and weekends on call. No nights 2months on Assessment Suite Rota is brutal in terms of schedule - >15nights in 2 months. However very well supported on nights and days. Days can be extremely busy but never overwhelming. Nights generally quite relaxed. Seniors including Consultants are supportive Overall good for and acute Med job imo Average F1 experience compared to other F1 rotations.

Awful. No support. Have to deal with situations well above F1 level. Do not recommend. Expect the PA to be able to go to clinics while you are doing bloods. It’s a joke.

Terrible rota. Very toxic assessment suite environment. Nursing staff extremely rude to any ethnic/non white juniors. Lots of bullying and racial micro aggressive behaviours from nursing staff as well as ward clerks. Senior doctors also offer no support to junior doctors when issues with nursing staff arise. If you’re white, you’ll be fine though.
