Overall the RVI in general seems to be very understaffed compared with other local trusts such as Sunderland and Northumbria.
On the orthopaedic rotation there are only 4-5 juniors and you all carry dect phones. In hours minimum staffing is 2 and one person will typically cover 45 trauma patients and another will cover between 10-20 spines patients plus 5 Paeds ortho patients.
Ultimately you are technically on call all the time to the ward and it is extremely busy with no departmental teaching.
There are also no F2’s on the ward and is notorious for being the most difficult F1 job in the hospital.
Seniors are great and love to get you involved in theatre but ultimately there is not time at all to go and you never stop, often finishing late.
It seems like the rotation may be improving for the better.

Awful. No support. Have to deal with situations well above F1 level. Do not recommend. Expect the PA to be able to go to clinics while you are doing bloods. It’s a joke.
