Pretty awful place to work. Very consultant heavy, so limited scope to get hands-on experience with anything other than bog standard majors patients. The consultants themselves are a variable bunch; a few nice ones but the rest are very cliquey and unwelcoming. Many don’t want to be bothered with questions from junior doctors, that much was painfully apparent. Minors is done by nurses and physios and you’ll rarely get a look-in. Paeds ED is a separate department entirely - one consultant there during the day and just nurses overnight. Maybe that’s a good thing if you want to avoid the kids. The department has very little teaching culture - it’s all business at board rounds and at the bedside. They put on a few trivial teaching sessions to meet their contractual requirements but these were, without exception, a half-hearted waste of time. The department has gone heavily down the ANP route and considers these guys SpR equivalents, but they do far more social shifts than you will “because you’re only here for a short time”. The acute medicine consultants and their ANPs are often wandering around the department, and the relationship between the two is a bit odd. Referring to them was unpleasant most of the time, and the ED consultants never backed you up. There’s a joke that Salford expects other hospitals to train its doctors, and this was probably about right given my experiences there. I learnt very little there, except not to go back. Awful. They should be ashamed and have their junior doctors removed.

Well supported. Lots of opportunities for learning. Well staffed.

Very much a ward-based trauma and orthopaedics job. Most of the time you’re the most senior doctor on the ward. Friendly consultants with some opportunity to get into theatre

Access to food is terrible, with an overpriced canteen which is open til 2pm Mon-Fri only, nothing available evenings or weekends. Consultants don’t care about trainee development and lean on them to cover their clinics etc whilst they do ‘other’ things without booking leave, it’s corrupt and unsafe. Get treated like dirt when we’re supposed to be mature professionals. Workload is massive and consultants aren’t always accessible for ooh or emergencies. Overflowing with professors but no support to carry out research. Go figure.
