Pretty good library, canteen, Costa, Gym (mostly cardio machines), massage chairs 2-3 days a week (pre-booking required), and a mosque to pray 5 times day (with Friday prayers!)
Free for doctors!
Electronic systems - Cerner / Unity - can be tricky to get your head round initially but is an okay system all round. Sometimes it can be quite inefficient but that’s most systems in the NHS!
Can easily take about 5 buses from West Brom Central (4,4M,4H,5,40) to a stop within 2 mins walk from the hospital. West Brom central is also 1 minute walk from the tram. If you can get on the tram, it’s very easy to get here.
The food isn’t great quality but there is food available everyday at the canteen. Breakfast starts at 7, lunch ends around 3, and dinner till about 7 or 8. Costa also serves food. There is usually one halal option available and there are also vegetarian options

This is an understaffed department on ALL levels - nursing, pre-reg level doctors, consultants, SALT, admin team. Two substantive consultants left in the last year meaning the senior decision making is run off locums. Band 6 nurses flat out refuse to work on one of the wards you cover as a stroke FY/SHO due to the incredibly thin nursing staffing f ...More
A pretty relaxed job and a very well run department. Senior support is available ALL the time. The seniors are super kind and helpful and answer any question you have! They are quite focused on explaining and teaching and ensure you have a good experience. Never have to leave late as ward jobs are usually completed on time. Since the job is easy, ...More
Pros: Amazing, supportive team from the top down, very easy to get on with and helpful, especially for a starting rotation. Lots to learn, and useful going forward. Very happy to teach practical skills and offer time in theatre. Cons: Sadly little teaching done as a department.
Generally very poorly ran department. Heavily reliant on locum consultants / regs / juniors due to an exodus of doctors. Some very questionable locum consultants. Rota is not terrible due to 6 week acute block on AMU comprising most of the on call shifts.
Friendly and supportive department. Lots of opportunity to go theatre if keen. Good workload, and easy to work with other surgical juniors.
