I personally did not enjoy this job but it just didn't suit my personality. As an F1, you're supernumerary so you have 0 responsibility and you just do standard ward round and ward jobs. I absolutely hate being supernumerary and having no responsibility. It's a very senior led job. There are no on call commitments which sounds cushy but I love being on call. Benefits of this are you can theoretically spend your ward time learning in a safe environment, doing projects and having a chill life. What actually happened for me was I had no SHO frequently so I was stuck doing all of the grunt work whilst being criticised for not doing the grunt work correctly or being just completely ignored. On top of all this I didn't really gain much clinical skill but the department does run good teaching. There's weekly departmental teaching and there's separate F1 teaching which you can allows go to because you're never on call. I did end up having a good chunk of knowledge of renal disease but wasn't really able to assess a deteriorating patient. There's also a small junior team and the other F1 is on a separate renal team so I felt quite isolated. There was a lot of toxicity and tension on the ward at the time as well due to lots of personalities clashing and it made a really horrible work environment. In my feedback, someone said it was a negative that I wanted to leave on time and should be sacrificing my free time to take part in "educational opportunities". I am not this type of person.
Pros: At least a reg was around all the time for sick patients, easy enough to take annual leave, good organised teaching.
Cons: You feel like a discharge summary monkey with literally no other value being dragged along an endless ward round.

Excellent job. I was really not looking forward to this placement because I expected care of the elderly to be monotonous and dull but it was the exact opposite. Over all of my jobs in foundation training, this job was the one where I learned the most. It comes with a price though. The ward I worked on was a surprisingly high turnover ward so the amount of work was endless and the ward rounds were eternal. I prefer a busy job though. It was well supported with a reg always around and consultant ward rounds twice a week. The ward sister was really supportive of us and supported us going home on time even if jobs (like discharge summaries) were outstanding. Pretty much everyone was really nice, there was a really good team spirit. Also the doctors get their own office which is really nice. There's also weekly departmental teaching for all grades of doctors as well as other healthcare workers and they allocate you a day to present something.
Pros: Exposure to a lot of medicine, will make you a better doctor. Own office. Great consultants.
Cons: Extremely busy.

Busy job, most seniors are very friendly / supportive, you’ll learn loads if you want to.
Overnight cross cover for neuro/stroke is tough but manageable.
