Review
Some departments are better/friendlier than others. General medicine is very friendly for example. There’s a few nasties in every department though, I found medicine more friendly overall more than the surgical teams. My teaching will be cancelled last minute because of staffing issues on one occasion. There’s a strong bullying culture in this hospital, mainly nurses towards foundation doctors or a+e towards FY2s doing the admissions. Lack of proper induction or training how to navigate the hospital I.E all the steps needed just to get someone a scope. Very high use of Locum doctors who are mostly very lazy compared to the trainees despite being on 3* the pay. You get the odd gem. Raising concerns usually gets you backlash. Asking for things to be better I.e payed a higher rate for a last minute shift request usually gets you labelled as rude/obstructive. Some nurses are worth their weight in gold, a lot will avoid doing their training for cannulas/catheters/bloods so they don’t have to increase their workload. Being bleeped to do 15 cannulas is standard for an FY1/FY1 during an on call. The mess is disgusting - domestic refuse to clean beyond empty the bins - so the microwave is currently an incubator for the next pandemic.
