I have worked here quite a few times and can honestly say I regret it every single time. There is minimal teaching or hands on experience it’s always keep going “see as many as you can” mentality. Forget about getting Resus area experience with critically unwell patients (or even simple sedation joint manipulations) as once intensive care arrive we are actively told to leave them to deal with it a situation you can see the anaesthetic trainees are even more exasperated with. Luckily they seem to have supportive senior staff who always arrive. But it would be nice to get a chance even doing an arterial line, assisting with intubations, sick CT transfer: just basics. Individually people are nice but a department that is clearly under extreme amounts of pressure and has lost direction.

Friendly staff and generally a nice atmosphere. Teaching wasn't great, very tickboxy. No departmental stuff due to covid.

There are a minority of really supportive colleagues and in retrospect I learnt lot, but was not a safe place to be a foundation doctor. There was regular bullying in some departments, for example A&E shouting and being singled out in handovers was very common. In orthopaedics, the level of responsibility for admissions and fracture manipulations was higher than most other hospitals at a similar grade - registrars were generally very unsupportive. I enjoyed my care of the elderly job most, it's a really nice group of consultants, but very limited teaching opportunities and high se to service provision.

Unless you enjoy making up every single IV antibiotic, sliding scale and magnesium sulphate infusion on 3 obstetric wards by yourself, stay away from this job as an SHO/GPST/FY2. Utter ridiculous that doctors are the ones that are doing this - supposedly midwives are not trained. Well guess what - neither was I! Unless you count a 10 minute video as training. There is times where you will be the one assessing a septic patient, cannulating them, sending the bloods doing an ECG, prescribing the antibiotics, making the antibiotics, and if it's a bolus then GIVING the antibiotics too. Entirely unsafe and honestly ridiculous. Add in to this, the midwives often just see you as their personal prescriber - to be clear, you will not use your brain for all 4 months of this job. Even more infuriating, nights can be okay, but the midwives do not coordinate amongst themselves so expect to be paged 3 times in a row by the same ward for menial things that can 100% wait until morning. Gynaecology can be okay but is honestly just really busy. At least you do get to actually diagnose people though. The non-on call days are good. Lots of clinic or theatre, whatever you prefer. However these days are too few relative to the volume of on call, and don't make up for the horror that is the on call shifts. Departmental teaching is good. Registrars are all excellent and supportive. If the relationship between the SHO's and the midwives could be sorted, and the SHO's asked to do less non-doctor tasks, this could be an okay job but as it is right now I cannot recommend.

A generally poor training experience, very little in the way of teaching. An incredibly busy department where the focus is for you to get your head down and see as many patients as possible in whatever corner they have space. Development for trainees is generally an after-thought. The majority of consultants are friendly, but some display a tendency towards bullying. Overall would recommend avoiding if possible.

Acute medical rota is run by someone who has very little understanding of human emotion. Expect to work up to 87 hours in a week. Teaching non-existent, very busy.

This was an excellent FY2 job overall. The job is team based, so you are attached to a consultant and senior registrar. You are very much a “surgical SHO” in the sense that your rota is made up of clinic, theatre, endoscopy, admin time and on-calls. Your “team” is responsible for all patients admitted during your consultants on call week until they are discharged. Ward rounds would usually be done by SHO and/ or registrar outside of on calls. The rota was quite tough (5 week on-call “block” which included 7x 13 hour shifts in a row), but senior support from registrars was excellent both in and out of hours. On-call would involve taking referrals from the wards/ ED. There was a separate CEPOD team for emergency theatre 8-5 Monday-Friday, and GP referrals would go to surgical ambulatory care during these hours. I think that the FY1s had a tougher time of it as they were expected to join several ward rounds simultaneously and cover the wards mostly independently. There was always parking available at the hospital. You also got your own locker in the theatre changing rooms and a pair of shoes for theatre (!). I imagine that your experience of the job could vary depending on which team you are assigned to and your level of interest in surgery. However, I would highly recommend this job to anyone interested in pursuing surgery as a career (or experiencing actual training in a foundation job).
