There's a small doctors mess with kitchen by AU1. It has a TV, two fridges and computers/landlines. Most doctors come here for breaks and because everyone is FY1-ST3 you get to know everyone really well just from going to the mess for lunch. Also has a costa coffee and WHSmith.
Free onsite parking. No issues getting a space when I was starting at 8am but I think it gets busier throughout the day and I see some cars parked outwith spaces.
Paper notes and prescribing. The only bleeps were for the arrest team, everything else was via dect phone.
Train links from Edinburgh (Haymarket + Waverley) to Kirkcaldy - BEWARE not on Sunday mornings (journey approx 30-45 mins, depending on which train you take). Kirkcaldy station is about 20 mins walk away from VHK. Bus from Kirkcaldy bus station - also about a 20 min walk to the hospital. Would not recommend as it takes much longer by bus and they ...More
Canteen is pretty terrible. There is a costa and WH Smith (both extortionate) as well as a “Grab ‘n’ Go” that is cheaper but of decent enough quality. Vending machine with microwave meals after hours Would recommend bringing your own food - there are two microwaves in the mess and a boiling water tap
Most doctors live in Edinburgh and commute. It's roughly a 45 minute drive along a dual carriageway.
Department super unhelpful. Toxic characters. Small DGH, very sick patient population. Working in surgical admission units - horrible experience with horrendous rota. Minimal teaching opportunities. Always on the go, underappreciated and castrated for not updating 'a consultant surgical list'. Wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy Gen surgery FY1 2 ...More
Very understaffed rota with lots of sick children and babies. No external locums ever used. Consultant support generally good and push for teaching which is welcome. Paper notes and archaic systems make the job probably nore stressful than it needs to be.
Small DGH, part of SES deanery, about 50 minute drive from Edinburgh. General medicine is divided into 2 months on your base ward and 2 months on-call in admissions unit. Base wards are allocated based on preference, specialties include: MOE, cardiology, renal, respiratory, endocrine/neurology, haematology/oncology, stroke and gastroenterology. Pr ...More
My first FY1 job. Small DGH in Fife, part of SES deanery, about 50 minute drive from Edinburgh. The general surgery job is not purely gensurg but covers 4 specialties. You will have shifts in surgical admissions (mostly gensurg and urology patients), a week in SHDU, as well as two 3-4 week stints on the wards in general surgery OR urology and ortho ...More
I did the first two jobs of my FY1 here and it was generally a pretty good place to work. Small hospital so you get to know a lot of people and feel like part of a team. Medical rota is fairly decent with lots of days off between on-calls compared to other jobs. Small mess next to AMU with some comfy chairs, a TV, two fridges, two microwaves. I ...More
